A lot of playlists feature great story, lyrics that just pull you into the experience. I decided to submit a playlist that, at least for me, shows the other side of great music – fantastic beats. By that I don’t just mean catchy hooks but the songs that come on and demand your attention and then implore you to play them again.
It is not that these songs have bad lyrics, clichéd lines, or bland stories. Rather, with these songs all that is beside the point because when they come on the music takes on a life of its own. All I want to do is move to the beat, hum the bit, and hear it again. Once is never enough. Some of the songs are happy, some are decidedly less so, and some are in some nebulous place in between, but they all make me take notice and listen. Just try to sit still. If you manage, you’re doing better (or maybe worse) than me.
Tyler is a graduate student, which provides him ample opportunity to sit in libraries and coffee shops listening to music on obnoxiously big headphones. Till August you can find him in Somerville, MA, studying art history and trolling the bike lanes in and around Davis Square. After that look for him in Iowa; he will still be wearing big headphones.
